No Ugly Words
By Rhonda Mann

No ugly words

No bullying, intimidating, or humiliating

Just a playful, happy companion

Something to look at you with love in its eyes

A guardian in the night

A growl that dispels the stealth of anyone approaching your bed

Hackles and teeth

Willing to protect you like the parents never would

Big is better

No one hits you or yells at you

When your dog is in the room

Walking without watching

In the street or in the park

Dangle a thousand dollars

In the face of a junkie

Without fear

All the while keeping the part of you that can love alive

Learning about love

This champion of your safety needs you

You must feed, protect and nurture it

It will protect you if it loves you

It will love you if you love and care for it.

Not every person you love is able to love and protect you

Every dog you love, is

They make it safe to sleep at night

And after some time, the nightmares forget to come

Big is better, more is better

They can be friendly

And still no one will chance it.

And the people who befriend you can only feel safe because they mean you no harm

And the part of you that can love

That was kept alive by the love of a dog

Can grow

Now you can learn to love people safely

To give all that you gave to your dog freely

Not listen for footsteps in the hall

Because you know they will not come to your room

And the people who you learn to love

Will not say ugly things to you

Or bully, intimidate or humiliate you

You have learned to look at the dog

And find the traits you respect and admire

Then find people that exhibit those same traits.
