Kel Simoon Azawakhs came into existence in the spring of 1989 with the arrival of my first Azawakh, Reckendahl's Kiffah. Our kennel name means, Kel, "from the tribe", and "Simoon" which is a ferocious, hot, dry wind which blows across the Afro Asian deserts. Our goals are to:
To this end, we breed only to dogs with good temperament. We screen our breeding dogs for thyroid and autoimmune function, hip dysplasia, and eye problems. We will willingly share and discuss these test results with potential Azawakh owners, feeling that it is vitally important that people should be able to make an informed decision about the dog with which they choose to share their life
- Breed Azawakhs you can live with (i.e., good temperament)
- Breed Azawakhs that can live (i.e., good health)
- Breed Azawakhs that are functional and are beautiful to look at.
Our dogs are raised as naturally and holistically as possible. We feed an all natural human grade kibble, along with fresh food additives and utilize an abbreviated vaccination protocol. We feel that the dogs are healthier and happier when raised this way.

Rhonda's PageI received my first dog (a Basset Hound) when I was three years old. The dog was lost or stolen about a year later. I spent weeks sneaking out of the yard to search for my dog, even though I was spanked each time I was caught.
The family dogs I grew up with were a miniature Poodle and an English Setter. I did not have a dog of my own again until I was fourteen. At 14, I was given an adult male German Shepherd. The dog was very unstable and I took a bad bite from him and became afraid of him. At 19, I got another Shepherd and began trying to overcome my fear. Due to unexpected changes in my living situation, I was unable to keep her. I did not have another dog for six years. I was introduced to Sighthounds 17 years ago. For many years, I kept two Borzoi and a German Shepherd. I was not interested in competition, but enjoyed having well behaved companions that I could take places with me. The three were trained to CD level, had earned their CGC's and two were registered therapy dogs. I enjoyed being able to share my wonderful companions with the world.
In 1990, I was introduced to the Azawakh. This breed seemed to have all the qualities that I loved in my Borzoi and Shepherd. I raised my first Azawakh, Tezma, as a favor to friends. I soon found myself with a human-dog bond more intense than I had ever thought possible. Regrettably, she was not stable and I was forced to put her down at three years of age for uncontrolled aggression.
It was this bond, and the frustration with the temperament that sparked my interest in breeding. I became determined to have an Azawakh who was beautiful, and as reliable as my other dogs.
I have co-bred seven litters and two of my own. Many conformation and field titled dogs have come from those litters, but my goal remains the same as in the beginning. To produce healthy and beautiful hounds that can be relaxed and enjoyed at home and in public. What I want for myself, I would also like to make available to anyone interested in the Kel Simoon Azawakhs.
